The RIX Storm S2R LRF Thermal Rifle Scope brings rangefinding and ballistic capability into an affordable, compact thermal optic built for real-world hunting. Featuring a 256×192 thermal sensor, 25mm F1.0 objective lens, 3.5× base magnification, and integrated 1,312-yard laser rangefinder, the Storm S2R gives hog and predator hunters the information they need without adding unnecessary size or weight to the rifle.

At approximately 0.9 pounds, the S2R is light enough to use as a handheld scanner and compact enough to remain comfortable on an AR-platform or bolt-action rifle. RIX also includes a Picatinny quick-detach mount, making it easy to move the scope between handheld and weapon-mounted use.

Built-In 1,312-Yard Laser Rangefinder

Judging distance after dark can be difficult, especially across crop fields, pastures, powerlines, and open terrain. The Storm S2R solves that problem with a compact laser rangefinder capable of measuring targets out to 1,312 yards, with advertised accuracy of ±1 meter or approximately ±1.09 yards.

The rangefinder works with RIX ballistic support to help calculate the proper holdover for your selected rifle and ammunition profile. This gives hunters confirmed distance information and useful ballistic guidance without requiring a separate handheld rangefinder.

The S2R also supports five zeroing profiles, allowing you to save different rifles, ammunition loads, or zero distances.

256×192 Thermal Sensor with 50Hz Imaging

The Storm S2R uses a 256×192 VOx thermal detector with a 12μm pixel pitch and thermal sensitivity rated below 25mK. Combined with its 25mm F1.0 germanium lens and smooth 50Hz refresh rate, the S2R delivers dependable thermal detection for hog hunting, coyote hunting, predator control, and nighttime property management.

Its 3.5× native magnification is well suited for hunting over feeders, shooting lanes, pastures, and common predator-calling distances. Digital magnification from 1× to 4× provides a total magnification range of approximately 3.5× to 14×.

The S2R offers a detection range of up to 1,422 yards, although positive identification and practical shooting distance will depend on the animal’s size, weather, terrain, and hunting conditions.

High-Resolution AMOLED Display

A 1024×768 AMOLED display gives the hunter a clean, responsive view of the thermal image, reticle, rangefinder information, and menu system. The 50Hz refresh rate keeps movement smooth when scanning fields or tracking running hogs and coyotes.

RIX includes both Sunny and Rain imaging modes. Sunny Mode is designed to reduce image noise in favorable conditions, while Rain Mode enhances subtle temperature differences in fog, humidity, rain, and other challenging environments.

Adjustable Picture-in-Picture

The Storm’s Picture-in-Picture mode provides a magnified view of the reticle area while preserving the wider field of view in the main image. Unlike basic PIP systems, the magnification of the S2R’s PIP window can be adjusted independently.

This allows the hunter to maintain awareness of surrounding animals while placing the reticle more precisely on the intended target.

Lightweight Dual-Purpose Design

The RIX Storm S2R weighs approximately 0.9 pounds, making it practical for use both on the rifle and as a handheld thermal scanner. Its raised directional controls are easy to locate in the dark and can be operated while wearing gloves.

A Picatinny quick-detach mount is included, allowing the S2R to be installed or removed without purchasing an additional mount.

Return-to-Center Zeroing

RIX’s Return-to-Center function automatically repositions the reticle closer to the center of the display after zeroing. This helps maintain a more natural sight picture and prevents the zeroed reticle from remaining unnecessarily close to the edge of the screen.

The S2R offers eight reticle styles and four reticle colors—white, black, red, and green—for a total of 32 possible reticle combinations.

Recording, Wi-Fi and the RIX+ App

The Storm S2R includes 32GB of internal storage for capturing photos and 1024×768 video. A built-in microphone records audio along with video, helping hunters preserve the entire experience instead of only the thermal footage.

Built-in Wi-Fi connects the scope to the RIX+ app on compatible Android and iOS devices. The app supports live image streaming, access to recorded footage, wireless firmware updates, and additional customization options.

Replaceable 18650 Battery System

The S2R operates on a common rechargeable 18650 battery and provides approximately 4.5 hours of runtime at 72°F. Two batteries and a charger are included, making it easy to swap batteries during longer hunts.

A USB-C port also supports a 5V external power supply for hunters who want to run the scope from an external battery pack.

Built for Hunting Conditions

The Storm S2R carries an IP67 protection rating and is designed to operate in temperatures ranging from -4°F to 122°F. Its 1000g recoil rating makes it suitable for a wide variety of centerfire hunting rifles and other hard-recoiling platforms.

Whether mounted on a hog rifle, predator setup, or property-management gun, the S2R provides an affordable combination of thermal detection, rangefinding, ballistic support, and field-ready durability.

Who Should Buy the RIX Storm S2R?

The Storm S2R is a strong choice for hunters who want:

  • An affordable thermal scope with an integrated LRF
  • Ballistic support without carrying a separate rangefinder
  • Useful 3.5× base magnification for fields and feeders
  • A lightweight thermal that can also serve as a scanner
  • Replaceable, commonly available 18650 batteries
  • A complete package with a QD mount, batteries, and charger

The main consideration is its 256×192 sensor. It provides dependable detection at an attractive price, but it will not retain the same detail under digital magnification as the 384×288 Storm S3R or the 640×512 Storm S6R. Hunters who regularly need confident identification at longer distances should consider moving up to one of those higher-resolution models.

For hunters primarily working inside common hog and predator-hunting distances, the S2R offers a lot of capability for the money.
